Regis College’s Elementary/Secondary Classroom Teacher Programs have earned International Literacy Association (ILA) recognition for the preparation of literacy professionals. The university was cited for “leading the way to advance excellence and equity in literacy acquisition worldwide.” The designation recognizes the Regis curriculum for meeting standards for knowledge, skills, and dispositions necessary for educational practice.

"The National Recognition Award from the International Literacy Association reflects the value and impact of a Regis education on students inspired to become teachers and administrators,” said Priscilla Boerger, EdD, Chair of the Regis Department of Education. “This honor reflects the hard work, innovative teaching, and commitment to fostering literacy and growth in our Elementary and Secondary classroom teaching programs. I am proud of the tireless work of our faculty, staff, and students which is reflected in this achievement, and we look forward to continuing to make a meaningful impact in shaping the future of education."

The ILA assesses institutions against a set of seven standards to ensure recognized organizations are equipping educators with the skills needed to teach literacy. The standards are foundational knowledge, curriculum and instruction, assessment and evaluation, diversity and equity, learners and literacy environment, professional learning and leadership, and practicum/clinical experiences for specialized literacy professionals.

According to ILA, the organization “connects research and practice to improve the quality of literacy learning across the globe in ways that are respectful, responsive, and ethical.”
